Biography

Jorge Calleja

Composer, guitarist and traditional Mexican guitar player. Born in Mexico City in 1971. He studied a degree in composition at the in the National School of Music of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. His works have been performed by great musicians as Nicolas Prost (France), Javier Nandayapa (Mexico), The University of Central Florida Flute Choir (USA), the saxophone quartet Anacrusax (Mexico), and the Alterno Cello Ensemble (Mexico).

His compositions have been recorded in 8 Albums such as Cuartetos Mexicanos de Saxofón By  Anacrusax Sax quartet (URTEX 2007), En torno al violonchelo, (UNAM 2006) and Narraciones musicales, based on Works of visual artists of México (ENM-UNAM 2003).

In 2012 produces the “Espirales” album of its chamber music fusion band Calleja de las Animas.

In 2011 won the institutional support FONCA to make a record with an anthology of his chamber music that will be presented in september 2012. Also won in the State of Mexico by the FOCAEM to compose four works for saxophone.

In 2010 composed the score for the film Juan Escopeta’s Revolution produced by AEROPLANO FILMS and ANIMEX; the premiere in commercial and art cinemas was in november 2012 in Mexico City. As well composed the scores for three animated shorts produced by La Matatena A.C, two short films produced by AEROPLANO FILMS, the documentary Tierra de Maiz (Land of Corn) by Pablo Gleason, and the short film Las tres mujeres fuertes (The Three Strong Women) by Jorge Estrada.

Currently is artistic director, composer and player of the bands: Gallina Negra (Black Hen), Calleja de las Ánimas (Alley of the Spirits), and Chilaquiles Verdes.
